What is Shamanism?
Shamanism is a term that is used in reference to the healing modalities of ancient tribal medicine men. A shaman is the healer, also known as the medicine man or woman of a tribe. Before there were doctors of medicine as we know today; these men and women would treat the illness not only with ceremony and mixtures of herbs, but also by working with a person’s soul.
Shamans heal the disease or condition of an individual at the soul level by working with the spirits of nature such as plants, animals, the elements: air, fire, earth, water, spirits of people and ancestors. By shifting their consciousness through meditation, drum beats or other means, they travel through the spiritual realms and gain knowledge and insights from these spirits to promote healing. Illness is viewed as a lack of power and in order to heal someone the shaman journey’s to retrieve the healing power that the person lost along the way and brings it back to them. This involves the removal of unhealthy, stuck energies in the body as well.
